Around 40 per cent of homes in Kingborough have a dog, and owners love to walk and socialise with their canine friends, so the upcoming community event What Dogs Can Do is a great way to investigate more opportunities to do just that.
The Kingborough Dog Walking Association (KWDA) are kick-starting a program of awareness and inspiration for owners to realise how important training is and what can be achieved.
Some dog walkers are using off-lead areas without meeting the legal condition of effective control, training their dog to come back when called, fondly referred to as recall.
While lack of recall is a statewide challenge, it is being addressed in Kingborough with the help and support of Kingborough Council.
The council were seen during the 2018 review of their Dog Management policy as one of the un-friendliest of municipalities towards dogs, so this is seen as a proactive step, especially when a protest rally attracted 500 plus people at the peak of the process.
KDWA even endorsed two candidates in the local elections, so determined were they in making the Kingborough Council more dog friendly.
The event invites not only dog families but is an opportunity for those a bit
wary of dogs to attend, as the only dogs present will be inside the demonstration
area.
In a first for KDWA the event is for attendees only and you must leave your dogs at home.
The Guide Dogs and Tasmania Police Dog Handling Unit will feature alongside a behaviourist and some domestic dog training demonstrators, designed to provide both inspirational and attainable models.
