Changes to building and plumbing permits

Before erecting, altering, extending, changing the use or demolishing a building the Kingborough Council recommends that you speak to their Development Services staff. The building project you are considering may require planning, building, demolition or plumbing approvals.

The council advises that the Building Act 2016 was recently amended to apply an expiry date of 1 July 2020 to building and plumbing permits issued between 1994 and November 2012 (Old Permits) that have not been completed.
If you have an Old Permit that is not complete, the permit will now expire on July 1, 2020 – unless it is extended before the expiry date or the work is completed.
An annual administration charge has been applied to all Old Permits that are currently open.
These will require payment within 90 days from the invoice date.
Permits are unable to be extended unless a completed application to extend the permit has been lodged with council, and all associated fees for the permit are paid.
Council will also not be able to issue Completion Certificates for building or plumbing work unless all associated outstanding fees for the permit are paid.
From July 1, 2020, a permit with outstanding building or plumbing work, outstanding fees or one which has not been extended, will expire.
If the permit expires you may need to apply for re-approval for the work.
The Consumer Building and Occupational Licencing Fact Sheet on Expired Permits is available at www.kingborough.tas.gov.au/building-demolition
Call the Customer Service Team on 6211 8200 if you need further information, with your permit application number for reference.
