Volunteers for Share the Dignity are committed to helping end period poverty through the August Dignity Drive and encouraging all Kingborough residents to donate sanitary products to Share the Dignity via the collection boxes located at Woolworths and Terry White at Kingston Town and Woolworths and Big W at Channel Court.
With women and young girls across Australia experiencing period poverty, Woolworths and Share the Dignity formed a partnership in March, with Woolworths committing to a five cent donation to the organisation from the sale of every packet of pads, tampons, liners or period briefs nationwide, to help make much needed?changes?to the lives of women in need.
Funds donated to date by Woolworths will be used to purchase 30 new ‘Pink Box Dignity Vending Machines’, which dispense free period packs to women and girls in need throughout domestic violence refuges, homelessness hubs and schools.
More than half of the 3.2 million Australians currently living under the poverty line are women and young girls and many experience period poverty on a monthly basis, meaning they are unable to afford necessary sanitary products.?
Rochelle Courtenay, founder of Share the Dignity, said;?“So many women, every month, have to forfeit sanitary products because they cannot afford them.
“Many mothers have to choose between buying?sanitary items?and feeding their children.
“While this is a major problem facing our society, it is a topic that not many people want to talk about.
“I applaud Woolworths for taking leadership in addressing this ‘taboo’ subject and helping the Share the Dignity team in driving greater awareness of this growing issue.”
Local Share the Dignity volunteers Jess, Jacqui and April, collect donations and deliver the sanitary products to charities in their local community to help alleviate this unnecessary indignity and are pleased that the partnership with Woolworths has sparked important conversations in the community and an increase in awareness of the issues that Share the Dignity is helping to address.
Part of the August fundraising for Share the Dignity includes their annual ‘Yoga 4 Dignity’ sessions which happen nationwide on Saturday, August 31.
Santosha Yoga is hosting the local session with instructor Tanja von Behren generously donating her time to run a Vinyasa Yoga class while all proceeds go towards helping Share the Dignity eradicate period poverty.
