Kingborough Council is changing its streetlights to energy efficient LEDs as part of the Great Southern Lights project, with work expected to be completed by Christmas.
“We are pleased to be changing over 1700 streetlights to LEDs across Kingborough,” said Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter.
“I would like to thank Ironbark Sustainability for managing the project, Aldridge Traffic Systems who are supplying the lights and ETS Electrical Services who are installing the lights.”
For Kingborough Council, the project has been funded by an interest free loan although savings from the conversion are anticipated to offset any costs.
“The LED lights are a lower wattage, which means they cost less to run, along with providing an improved, controlled light,” said Mayor Winter.
“These will enable us to make significant savings of approximately $200,000 per year in operational costs.
“Installing the new lights delivers real action on energy efficiency.”
Mayor Winter has also emphasised the strong results expected with regards to environmental impacts from the changeover.
“Street lighting is one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions from local government in Australia,” said Mayor Winter.
“Over the 20-year life span of the LED lights, we would be reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 2,300 tonnes of carbon dioxide.
“This equates to emissions from over nine million kilometres driven by an average car.”
The Great Southern Lights project is a collaboration between six councils, the Local Government Association of Tasmania and TasNetworks.
