Sometimes small changes can make a big impact, as the new dining laneway and large colourful mural in the main street of Kingston demonstrates.
Acting Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Jo Westwood said the mural is a step in aligning the existing CBD with Kingborough Council’s vision for the future.
“The mural, lighting and paving of the laneway really brightens the streetscape and is in line with council’s vision to encourage alfresco dining in the Kingston CBD,” remarked Acting Mayor Westwood.
The laneway features greenery, seating areas and lights hung over the top, creating a pleasant atmosphere to dine and socialise.
Restaurant owner, Young Kim said his new Korean food restaurant next to the laneway has been very busy since opening recently, proving the popularity of the newest dining area in central Kingston.
The laneway was a result of the Kingborough Council’s Planning team working with the building owner to incorporate a minor amendment to the planning permit.
“Originally the laneway was going to be left as a driveway, so this is a much better outcome for everyone,” said Acting Mayor Westwood.
“It provides options for people to dine outside in fine weather and brings some colour and life to the streetscape.”
The mural is by Tasmanian artist Jamin, who is well known for his contemporary street art.
“This fits really well with council’s plans to transform Kingston’s main street from a grey highway into something that is attractive for our residents and visitors,” Acting Mayor Westwood continued.
“Later in the year the council will be consulting with the community on new designs for the Channel Highway streetscape.
“This mural is a great start and shows how a collaborative approach to planning can change our experiences for the better.”
