Kingston’s CBD is to be transformed into an attractive, vibrant and more accessible destination with wide, leafy green walkways, outdoor dining and slower traffic.
Upgrades to the section of Channel Highway that runs through central Kingston are to commence in mid-2022.
In preparation, Kingborough Council will be trialling a temporary roundabout at the intersection of Channel Highway and Hutchins Street, for at least a four-to-six-week period, commencing this week.
Council will be collecting data on pedestrian movements, traffic flows and speeds, to inform the final configuration of the Channel Hwy upgrade.
There will also be a temporary pedestrian refuge islands, signage and line marking installed.
Kingborough Mayor, Paula Wriedt said the upgrades would create a more welcoming and accessible shopping precinct.
“The community have told us that they want Kingston to be a healthy and vibrant centre of the municipality,” Cr Wriedt said.
“As a Council we want to transform Kingston’s CBD with leafy walkways and greener areas that are connected physically and visually to the natural surroundings.
“To do this we will be upgrading the main road with wider footpaths for pedestrians and outdoor dining, installing more plantings, slowing traffic down, improving cycling access and supporting the use of public transport with appealing infrastructure.
“By upgrading the CBD in Kingston, Council aims to support the creation of local jobs and attract further investment for Kingborough, diverting people having to travel to Hobart for shopping.”
