It’s Cystic Fibrosis awareness month, with a challenge to warm hearts.
Local resident, Jen Hauser, a physiotherapist who has worked in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) for over 20 years, is now working an advocate, fundraiser and active participant, with Cystic Fibrosis Tasmania.
In May, the 65 for CF Realise the Dream campaign encourages individuals to do a challenge, based on the numbers 6 and 5, to raise awareness and funds.
“May is 65 Roses month, when we raise the profile of this invisible disease,” said Jen.
“Sixty-five roses came about in the US when a young boy couldn’t pronounce the name of his condition, and called it “65 roses”.
Jen and her two daughters aim to perform and capture images of “65 Poses for 65 Roses”, while visiting local iconic landmarks and business.
Mayor Paula Wriedt, who is also Executive Officer for Cystic Fibrosis Tasmania, has been undertaking her own 65 for CF Challenge.
“I took on a big challenge this year, committing to doing something fitness related every day for 65 days to put the spotlight on Cystic Fibrosis and encouraging my friends to donate, which has helped to keep me motivated,” said Mayor Wriedt.
“So if you see anyone out and about wearing red during May they might be doing a challenge supporting Cystic Fibrosis, stop and ask them about it”.
Cystic Fibrosis is a genetic condition primarily affecting the lungs and digestive system.
It is a life shortening condition with the current life expectancy in the 40’s.
There is no cure.
From birth, a person with CF undergoes constant medical treatments.
These can include hours of intensive daily physiotherapy and taking many tablets a day, consisting of antibiotics, and enzymes to help digest food.
One in 2500 babies born in Australia is born with CF, averaging one newborn every four days.
