Recently the changerooms at Snug Park have undergone a major upgrade to level the playing field for local sporting clubs.
“Thanks to a $150,000 election promise from Jacquie Petrusma, the Snug Park changerooms which have been transformed from an outdated old building which catered for male sport only, into a nice clean changeroom facility which caters for players of both male and female sport,” Dallas Millhouse, President of the Snug Cricket Club and a volunteer worker on the project.
The changerooms are occupied predominantly by the Snug Cricket Club in the summer months, and the Channel Junior Football Club in the winter, but are also used by the Cygnet Football Club including Port Women, and the Kingborough Tigers Junior Football Club, as well as the Seas Scout Regatta which will make its return in 2023.
“Female participation has been growing year on year, and thanks to the Channel Junior Football Club (CJFC) for identifying this during their strategic planning back in 2020 with a need to cater for this growing participation,” Dallas said.
“A group consisting of members of both the CJFC and the Snug Cricket Club then got to work coming up with some concept ideas for this project, and other projects around the place.
“With the help of Clubs Tasmania, we were able to apply for a number of Grants, large and small to try and chip away at the projects we had in the pipeline, albeit unsuccessful.
“However, the inspiration and guidance from Clubs Tas spurred the group on to continue campaigning and trying to gain some funding.
“Eventually, we were lucky enough to secure election promises from both the Labor and Liberal parties for the May 2021 State Election.
“Now proudly we can say we now have a fit for purpose, male and female changerooms which cater for all sports and events.
“Thank you to Jacquie Petrusma and the Liberal Government for the funding and to the Kingborough Council for your assistance in making this project a reality.”
Andrew Moore and Clubs Tasmania were also thanked by the Snug and Channel volunteers for their assistance, inspiration, and support from the conception of this project.
The upgrades were assisted by local suppliers and subcontractors from the Kingborough, Channel, Huon and wider southern Tasmanian businesses.
“And finally thank you to all of the local volunteers who gave up time to work on this project to see it through to completion,” Dallas continued.
“It is something for everyone to be proud of.
“We have already seen the first hit out in these rooms with a double header Friday night match on Friday, May 27 to a great success.
“The next major event to take advantage of the upgraded changerooms will be on Friday, June 24 with the first female matches for the Southern Storm U17.5 girls taking on Huonville at 6pm, followed by the Port Women taking on Lindisfarne at 7:30pm, where we hope to officially Launch the rooms.”
