Snug Volunteer Fire Brigade were recently presented with a plaque of appreciation from Buckingham Palace after forming a connection with HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
Snug Volunteer Fire Brigade Life Member David Archer and Snug Volunteer Fire Fighter Stephenie Wigg have complied the following story for the community.
Just four weeks after the 1967 bushfires that devastated the Snug community, Prince Philip visited the established Snug Park, a city of tents, huts and caravans housing those who in the Channel community who lost their homes.
Just two days after the event, the plan was made to assist the community with volunteers and contractors from all over the state and the mainland, contributing in the establishment of the temporary housing located where Snug Oval is this day.
By the February 18, just eleven days in total, the first family settled into their accommodation.
On the 40th anniversary of the 1967 fires, The Duke of Edinburgh sent a letter of reflection expressing his vivid memories of the destruction, and meeting the affected families during his visit.
In his letter, Prince Phillip sent his well wishes and said he was pleased that the community still commemorates the tragedy.
Following Prince Philip’s passing in April 2021, members who were present during his visit sent their sympathies to Queen Elizabeth II and shared their experience of the Royal visit.
