A new Tasmanian Aboriginal tour mumara patrula “Wood for the Fire” was launched this month at Trial Bay by Kingborough Council in conjunction with Performing Lines Tasmania and creator Nunami Sculthorpe-Green.
Kingborough Deputy Mayor, Clare Glade-Wright said the tour was very moving and was brilliantly presented by creator Nunami Sculthorpe-Green.
“This is the first and only Aboriginal-authored tour available south of nipaluna/Hobart,” Cr Glade-Wright said.
“The tour takes you on a gentle bush walk along the coastline of Trial Bay, while you hear the historical stories of legendary Aboriginal Elders.
“Although the stories shared are often about terrible times in our history, there is also much heart and beauty conveyed about the Aboriginal custodians of this land, their community and practices.
“I totally recommend this tour, although you will have to be quick as tickets are selling out fast.
“The tour is supported by a RANT grant which is focused on building capacity for Tasmanian communities, artists and organisations here in Tasmania.”
Tour creator Nunami Sculthorpe-Green said mumara patrula was a new and exciting journey for her.
“I’ve enjoyed working with Performing Lines TAS and the Council to share these important stories of our people,” Ms Sculthorpe-Green said.
“I applaud Kingborough Council for their initiative and action when it comes to truth telling and highlighting Tasmanian Aboriginal stories in the municipality.
“As the stories intertwine with the beautiful landscape, I feel they will present a truly unique and touching experience for locals and visitors alike.”
Kingborough Mayor Cr Paula Wriedt also commended Nunami on winning Tourism Minister’s Young Achiever Award on November 5, saying, “Nunami has developed a fantastic cultural tourism business which is providing great opportunities for community members and tourists to understand the long history of Tasmanian Aboriginal people.
“Council has been fortunate to be able to join together with Nunami to bring a new walking tour to Kingborough called mumara patrula – Wood for the Fire.
“We look forward to working with Nunami into the future.”
Senior Producer at Performing Lines TAS, Annette Downs said Performing Lines TAS had produced Nunami’s first tour in niplauna.
“We are delighted to have produced and co-commissioned this latest tour with the Kingborough Council,” Ms Downs said.
“Nunami’s historically accurate and beautifully crafted tours connect us with place, the palawa people and the truth of the past.”
