Kingborough Council celebrated the unique walks hosted by Nunami Sculthorpe-Green from Blak Led Tours with the last tour to be held on Saturday, August 6.
Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt said the walks were beautifully crafted and historically accurate, connecting visitors and community members with the palawa people’s culture and history.
“The tours provided a fantastic opportunity to open up conversations about Tasmanian Aboriginal history, connection to landscape, and palawa language in Tasmania,” Cr Wriedt said.
Nunami Sculthorpe-Green, business owner of Blak Led Tours, said it was important to be telling Aboriginal stories in the places where they came from.
“I thank Council for actively seeking out truth telling and for providing the opportunity for many people to hear these stories in Kingborough,” Ms Sculthorpe-Green said.
“True stories are very important to hear.
“A lot of locals have attended my tours and I appreciate their openness to the history.
“It’s about stories that transform people, not about translating stories for people.”
Local participant, Meg Denman said she had tried for a long time to get into the tour.
“I was thrilled to have the opportunity and first-hand experience with the palawa people speaking about their history and culture,” Ms Denman said.
Development of the tours was supported by a RANT grant which focused on building capacity for Tasmanian communities, artists and organisations here in Tasmania.
“While the initial program of tours supported by Council is almost complete, Blak Led Tours is working on providing future truth-telling tours in Kingborough,” Cr Wriedt said.
