Labor Member for Franklin Dean Winter is hosting a community meeting for Channel residents to discuss concerns over the Channel Highway.
Mr Winter said Channel locals have been sharing with him their frustration that the Channel Highway is not fit to serve the fast-growing region.
The Channel Road Safety Forum will take place at Snug Hall on October 22.
“People have raised road safety issues for a long time,” Mr Winter said.
“The Channel is attracting a lot of new residents and that means more traffic, and we need a main road that can cater for that.”
Mr Winter said there are flashpoints along the highway, and many were identified in the Government’s own corridor study.
“This month marks three years since that report looked at the stretch between Algona Road and Sandfly Road,” Mr Winter said.
“The report recommends some basic safety measures such as widening road shoulders and changing the speed limit near the notoriously bad Howden Road intersection.
“These do not involve high-end engineering.”
Further south, residents in Kettering and Snug have campaigned for safer crossings in built-up areas.
Back in 2021 they collected hundreds of signatures in a petition Mr Winter tabled in Parliament, but the Government rejected it.
Currently, locals are campaigning for the shared bicycle and pedestrian path to be extended from Snug to Coningham.
“Just think how popular the existing shared path from Margate to Snug is,” Mr Winter said.
“People want to ride a bike and walk, but only when it is safe to do so.
“These communities deserve infrastructure that is up to the task.”
