Council contends for AFL centre

Kingborough Council submitted a proposal for hosting the Tasmanian AFL High Performance Centre at the Twin Ovals complex on Wednesday, December 13.
The proposal includes a comprehensive plan to enhance existing facilities, ensuring they meet the standards required by elite athletes.
Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt said Council was excited to present the proposal to the State Government and potentially increase the sporting facilities available in Kingborough.
“We already have 33 different sporting groups using the Kingborough Sporting Precinct, including the Tasmanian Jack Jumpers, State Gymnastics Centre and Kingston High School,” Cr Wriedt said.
“Adding the High Performance Centre into the mix will build on Kingborough’s existing high-class facilities and provide a solid venue for the growth of Australian rules football in Tasmania.”
The application has the backing of stakeholders like the Kingborough Tigers Football and Kingborough District Cricket Clubs, who have both written letters of support for the proposal.
Two new ovals and a new clubroom for the Kingborough District Cricket Clubs included in the proposal would mean that cricket club juniors would no longer need to play home games in Brighton.
“The existing infrastructure combined with our commitment to continual improvement guarantees a world-class facility that will attract athletes from across the nation,” Cr Wriedt said.
“We are also confident that our community will be an attractive place for the players and staff, as our appeal extends beyond just the excellent facilities and into the very fabric of our community.
“With the proximity to Hobart, coupled with Kingston’s quality of life, including its great schools, pristine beaches and natural environment, we are hoping this proposal makes an attractive offer for the AFL team and its players.”
It is anticipated a site will be selected in early 2024.
