Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt announced the recipients of the Kingborough Awards, including two community groups and two outstanding individuals in a community ceremony on Saturday, January 6.
The Kingborough Community Group the Year was awarded to Kingborough Community Missions, who provide around 10,000 meals every year to Kingborough community members experiencing tough times.
“They have made an outstanding contribution to the social wellbeing of the Kingborough Community,” Cr Wriedt said.
The Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to the Kingston Neighbourhood House team of volunteers.
The Young Citizen of the Year was awarded to Amelie Hudspeth.
Ms Hudspeth was a Sea Scout and has grown into leadership roles for climate change awareness.
“Amelie is an organised, confident and passionate young leader who is committed to making a difference,” Cr Wriedt said.
The Citizen of the Year was presented to Hester van Niekerk for her continual effort in helping others.
Hester has volunteered with the Lions Club for over 14 years for many events including the Kingborough Art Prize, Love Living Locally, Day at the Park as well as being a devoted fundraiser for children’s cancer research.
“Mrs van Niekerk is well deserving of this award and is a community treasure worth celebrating,” Cr Wriedt said.
“These awards are a way for Council to honour the outstanding voluntary service by community members who make Kingborough such a great place.
“The Kingborough Awards also provide an opportunity to celebrate how important volunteers are in our community, with 297,000 Tasmanians volunteering each year.
“Kingborough proudly has a high level of volunteers who give up so much of their time.”
