The seventh annual International Women’s Day (IWD) dinner was held in Blackmans Bay at the Beach House Restaurant on March 6, with the theme ‘Inspire Inclusion’.
IWD is officially observed on March 8 every year, celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The day also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Significant activity is witnessed worldwide as groups come together to celebrate women’s achievements or rally for women’s equality.
The guest speaker at the IWD dinner was Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt.
In 2011, Cr Wriedt was elected as a councillor on Kingborough Council in 2011, and in 2021 became Kingborough’s first female mayor.
For the past ten years, she has chaired the Council’s Disability Inclusion and Access Committee, advocating for improved facilities for people living with disability.
Presenter Mikala Grosse interviewed Cr Wriedt on her work on disability inclusion and the importance of interconnected and accessible communities.
Other IWD events were held across Kingborough including a wellness talk and tea hosted by nurse and health counsellor Heather Kennett at the Kingborough Community Hub on Friday, March 8.
Heather led her audience through some simple steps to improve their health and wellness.
Fran Spears set up a stall at the Kingston Town Shopping Centre where she sold her new book His Crimes, Her Secrets, raising awareness about domestic violence.
