The Kingston Sea Hags have partnered with Hobart City Mission (HCM) for the Sleep Rough event on Friday, May 24.
Sea Hags Daniela Dadswell, Fiona Keserue-Ponte, Mitzi Quill and Jacqui McElwee have already reached their $1000 fundraising goal and are now working on doubling it.
Jacqui McElwee said that two group members had taken part as individuals in previous years and enjoyed being part of such a worthwhile event.
“Throughout the year, the group has raised money for several charities, including Laps for Life and Ducktober,” she said.
“We see ourselves as a community of strong and determined women from all walks of life.
“As a group we provide important support to each other in many circumstances, and we also want to extend our support to others in our community.”
One of the Sea Hags, Joanna, is a regular volunteer at HCM, helping to prepare food packages.
“She has told us about the important work that is done there,” Jacqui said.
“We are very aware of the concurrent housing, rental, health and cost of living crises that are impacting on so many members of our community.
“If we can raise some money to support HCM’s work that’s great, and it is equally important to raise awareness and to encourage others to think about how they can contribute.
“Sleeping safely at PW1 for one night doesn’t seem like a big sacrifice at all.”
The Sleep Rough event raises funds for emergency shelter, food and supplies for those affected by homelessness.
It also helps to fund transitional housing programs and outreach services.
One in every 81 Tasmanians has received homelessness support.
