Kingston’s Saltbush Child and Family Learning Centre (CFLC) officially opened on Thursday, August 1 with Minister for Education Jo Palmer and Liberal Member for Franklin Jacquie Petrusma attending.
Minister Palmer said the centre will provide wrap around services and support for both expectant parents and families with young children, where they can access quality education, health, support and outreach services.
“Saltbush has been community-led from the beginning, with a Local Enabling Group comprised of representatives from the area, educators and service providers involved in its development and design,” Minister Palmer said.
“The CFLC staff have been delivering pop-up Play and Learn sessions twice weekly in the Kingborough area over 18 months.
“Children and families have thoroughly enjoyed the activities and are excited to see the centre now fully operational, with a range of quality early learning opportunities available both indoors and outdoors.”
Liberal Member for Franklin Jacquie Petrusma said families were excited to have a communal space to gather and connect.
“I congratulate the Kingborough community, including families, staff and members of the Local Enabling Group, for the work they’ve put into establishing Saltbush,” Ms Petrusma said.
“Saltbush CFLC is a welcoming space that will allow children to make friends, learn, play and thrive.”
Saltbush features a unique external mural showcasing the fauna and flora of Kingborough, which was developed by Tasmanian artist, Mel McVee, with assistance from the local children and families.
The centre is named after the Saltbush plant, which grows throughout the Kingborough area and reflects its position between the salt (the coast) and the bush.
