The Kingborough Chronicle 2024 Footy Tipping competition has concluded in a dramatic fashion with a tie between independent member for Franklin David O’Byrne and Fred Newton from Glendon Insurance Brokers.
After taking out first place in the Huon News competition in 2023 and 2024 David decided to try out his hand in the Kingborough competition for the first time and ended up matching Fred with a total score of 137.
David and Fred shared first place honours and prize, proudly sponsored by Hyperdrive Kart Racing.
Fred is no stranger to the competition, consistently polling well and having won in previous years too.
Kingborough Councillor Kaspar Deane was looking to be this year’s winner with a strong start but lost momentum in Round 7, where Fred and eventually David caught him up.
Kaspar finished in a respectable second place with a total score of 135.
Brett Irvine from newsXpress finished third, an improvement from last year when he finished fifth.
2023 winner Ricky Shaw from Kingston Locksmiths also finished equal third with a total of 130.
Steve Westwood from Co-Op Toyota describes himself as ‘always the bridesmaid’, because he always tips well, finishing second on multiple occasions, but never quite making it to first place.
This year Steve ended up with a score of 129, sharing fourth place with Terry Cutcliffe from Hyperdrive Kart Racing and Robert Jacobs from Kingston 4WD and Tyres.
Massive West Coast fan Joe Assi from Kingston Beach Takeaway came fifth with 127.
Del Shepherd from Trilogy Hair loyally tipped the Magpies every week, even when she thought they would lose, coming sixth with 126.
Jane Barker from Stella Hairdressing, also loyal to her club the mighty Western Bulldogs, polled 123 and claimed seventh place this year.
New tipper and King of the Caravans, Laurie Brcic from Alpha’s Caravan and RV Centre, took a different approach.
Laurie was loyal to Richmond for the first week until his tipping was hijacked by his one of his staff members, Samantha, and together they ended up with 119.
Also tied on 119 and eighth place was Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt.
Claiming his first wooden spoon with a total of 116, everyone’s favourite local butcher Brian “Biko” from Kingston Town Meats came in ninth place.
This was a surprising result from Biko, Shane and the team at Kingston Town Meats, who have previously won the competition.
