The Huon Channel Cricket Association (HCCA) launched the women’s cricket season on Friday, November 8 with their first round kicking off on Sunday, November 10.
The season launch took place at Twin Ovals, home of the Kingborough District Cricket Club (KDCC).
HCCA President Dallas Millhouse said the KDCC has been a massive support to the success of this competition since its inception in 2022/23, and continue to provide support, coaching and a pathway for HCCA women to higher level cricket.
The women’s roster has flourished this year, with the number of teams growing from four to six following the additions of Woodbridge and Margate.
Special guest Clive Rose, former Tasmanian and Hobart Hurricanes star, said this growth was great to see, noting that fellow special guest and current Hobart Hurricanes player Amy Smith had to start cricket in a boys’ team.
Also in attendance was Cricket Tasmania Community Cricket Manager Paul Taylor.
After a rapid-fire round of speeches, guests were then treated to a barbecue dinner and the opportunity to get to know the other teams before facing each other on Sunday.
The new teams Margate and Woodbridge were matched up against each other in the first round.
“The skill level and enthusiasm on display for both sides was fantastic, and proves both clubs will fit right into a competitive competition,” Dallas said.
Margate drew first blood with a convincing 78-run victory, defeating Woodbridge 5-118 to 8-40.
The second game saw Slab Road play Kettering in a high-scoring affair, with Kettering winning by 35 runs, 1-135 to 4-100.
The final match saw Snug host the back-to-back premiers, the Summerleas Eagles.
Snug batted first, managing a solid 4-84 which looked competitive, but Summerleas answered by getting home in the 17th over to win by eight wickets, finishing on 2-85.
