World Croquet Day was celebrated in style at the Kingston Croquet Club on Saturday, May 3.
Elaine Hazell provided the following account of the day.
Lunch was a gourmet feast of food from many different countries and the flags of croquet-playing nations were flying in front of the clubhouse.
After lunch, both lawns were combined as one and the 12 hoops were each allocated a country flag, whilst other croquet-playing countries’ flags were hung for a ‘Guess whose flag?’ competition.
Teams then had to play ‘around the world,’ crisscrossing the lawns for each of the 12 hoops.
It was great fun, with balls going everywhere and the New Zealand team was crowned the winners.
The day coincided with the 80th birthday of long-time member, Bob Beattie, and most of his family members were on hand to join in the double celebration with one of the Beatties’ famous birthday cakes.
