Kingston Twin Oval will be the site for the new AFL High Performance Centre, but at a higher cost.
“Kingborough Mayor Paula Wreidt told ABC Radio that negotiations to bring the High Performance Centre to Kingston included a commitment from the State Government to also fund the relocation of existing sports facilities and other infrastructure upgrades, including creating new ovals, relocating or rebuilding local grassroot club facilities and even building a new road,” Shadow Minister for Infrastructure Anita Dow said.
“So the question for the Liberals is, how much is the full project going to cost?”
Minister for Sports and Events Nick Duigan announced that the upcoming 2025-26 State Budget will include $105 million towards delivering this project, which is expected to be completed by October 2027.
The project was originally budgeted at $60 million.
Minister Duigan said this investment is a key part of a once-in-a-generation project that will set up Tasmania for the future, creating hundreds of jobs in the local community.
“This facility will be the home of the Tasmanian AFL team and is critical for our entry into the AFL,” he said.
“Kingborough will become home to hundreds of players and staffers, and their families.
“They will be living here in the community, working here, shopping here, raising their families here and – importantly – contributing to the local economy.
“Having this facility in Kingborough builds a better Tasmania: now, and for the future.
“It ensures we have a strong economy by backing business and economic growth.”
Design work is nearly complete, with a development application expected to be lodged in coming months and a construction tender later this year.
