Sandfly local Jonas Shelverton, 18, has been selected to represent Australia in the UCI Junior Track World Championships in Apeldoorn, Netherlands this August.
Jonas has already achieved remarkable results across both track and road disciplines.
He has broken multiple Tasmanian state records in track cycling and earlier this year placed second in the U19 National Road Championships in Perth.
He has also earned podium finishes at both National and Oceania Track Championships this year.
More recently, Jonas celebrated his first European podium, finishing third in a stage of the UCI Track Cycling Nations Cup, where he competed for Australia.
Jonas is currently completing his Year 12 studies remotely whilst training and racing in Europe.
When he is home he trains 15 to 20 hours per week in addition to his full-time study.
“He hopes to podium at the World Championships and has long-term ambitions to become a professional cyclist,” Jonas’ mother Claire said.
“To get Jonas and his equipment to the Netherlands for training camps and the event itself is an expensive undertaking, so we’ve started a fundraiser.”
Jonas hopes to raise $9000 to cover the costs, and at the time of print has raised close to $3500.
“Turns out cycling is an expensive sport at this level, and I’d really appreciate any support you can offer,” Jonas shared on his donation page.
