The Longley International Hotel held The Burning on Saturday, August 23.
This marks the fifth year the event has been held at Longley Hotel, with this year’s Burning featuring a sphinx, pyramid, Stargate and Cleopatra’s Needle.
The motivation for The Burning comes from creator Johan Mets, who grew up with bonfires representing a social gathering point for families.
Drawing inspiration from Burning Man (an annual event in which an enormous wooden effigy is symbolically burnt), Johan and his families have built a range of interesting sculptures for their own Burning over the years, including castles, trolls, Star Wars scenes and a Lego Freddie Mercury.
Johan and his family have been gathering supplies for this year’s Burning since April, and have put many weeks of working into the build, which was completed by Johan, his daughter Sarah and her husband Ben Rainbird.
The sphinx they built stood an impressive 3.5 metres tall, 3 metres wide and 8 metres long.
Their Stargate boasted glowing symbols and the pyramid was 6 metres wide on each side.
The Burning commenced at 6pm, with a fireworks display following shortly after at 6.15pm.
Adults and children alike were kept entertained with a range of music, including bagpipes and cello, as well as balloon and clown work from Crazy Daisy and face painting by Funny Face.
