Lions deliver checkmate for Margate Primary

The much-loved Margate Primary School is one of the state’s oldest and most cherished by the community it serves.
The history of the school goes back to 1869 and now boasts a student population of 365 with about 60 staff, including 25 teachers to manage the important asset.
As with any organisation, resources are finite and there comes a time when the movers and shakers at the school must put out their hand for help.
When the much-used outdoor chess pieces reached their use-by date, that is exactly what the school did …ask for help.
First off, they approached the Channel Men’s Shed for help to refurbished the old wooden pieces.
Unfortunately, the wooden pieces were beyond repair.
This is when ‘Plan B’ came into operation.
The Kingborough Lions club stepped in, and it was decided to purchase the updated version.
Since they were introduced, the outdoor chess set-up has been in constant use.
“We stepped in and decided to purchase the updated version with the latest materials of construction,” said a club spokesperson.
“Working together within our community gives us pleasure as this is what Lions International is all about.
“We are so pleased to have been able to contribute to such a worthy cause as to see the happy faces around the playground makes what we do so worthwhile.”
Margate Primary School Business Manager, Donna Belstead, said “the students absolutely love the new set.”
