Blackmans Bay Scout Group leader Brian Williams was recognised for an extraordinary 60 years of volunteer service during Kingborough Council’s Celebrating Kingborough Volunteers event at the Kingborough Community Hub on May 22.
The honour highlighted a lifetime spent mentoring young people, building community connections and helping generations of scouts develop confidence, leadership skills and a sense of adventure.
Mr Williams, who was named Tasmania’s Senior Australian of the Year in 2021, has devoted more than half a century to Scouting and has become one of the state’s most respected youth mentors.
Under his leadership, the Blackmans Bay Scout Group has grown into one of Tasmania’s largest and most successful scout groups.
His recognition came during a celebration of volunteers from across Kingborough, representing organisations ranging from community support groups and sporting clubs to emergency services and youth programs.
The evening also featured a presentation from father-and-son adventurers Phil and Ned Wise, who shared stories from their fundraising bicycle ride from Neika to Darwin.
The event was particularly significant as it marked the final community event attended by outgoing Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt in her role as mayor.
National Volunteer Week is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteering and recognises the social, cultural and economic contribution volunteers make to communities across the country.
