Community spirit shines

Kingborough Helping Hands was once again overwhelmed by the incredible community support shown at this year’s Edna’s Soup and Sandwich Luncheon, held at the Twin Ovals in Kingston last Sunday, July 19.
More than 200 guests arrived eager to support the organisation, filling the room with warmth, laughter and generosity that reflected the very best of the Kingborough community.
Entertainer Colin Dean from The Croons had everyone singing and dancing throughout the afternoon, while local favourite Ben “Bolts” Harrison kept the crowd entertained as master of ceremonies and led a lively auction of generously donated prizes.
While the afternoon was filled with fun, its purpose was an important one.
The luncheon is a major fundraiser that helps Kingborough Helping Hands continue supporting local people experiencing hardship.
President Edna shared moving stories that highlighted the growing impact of the cost-of-living crisis on individuals and families across the community.
The need has never been greater.
Kingborough Helping Hands has already provided more community assistance in the first part of this year than during the whole of last year.
The organisation provides emergency food relief, supports local school breakfast clubs, operates Loui’s Van each week, assists people experiencing homelessness, and responds to many other needs as they arise.
Edna spoke of one local school where the breakfast club now supports more than 100 children, illustrating the growing demand experienced across the community.
None of this would be possible without the generosity of volunteers, local businesses and community members who donate their time, food, prizes, services, and financial support.
“We simply couldn’t do what we do without this amazing community,” Edna said.
“Every ticket purchased, every prize donated and every volunteer who gives their time helps us continue supporting local people when they need it most.”
The success of the luncheon was a wonderful reminder that, even in challenging times, the Kingborough community continues to come together to care for one another.
