The generosity of the local community has given The Kindness Cubby Tasmania a flying start, with more than 1,600 items donated during its first community donation drive.
The newly established not-for-profit initiative held the drive at Margate Hall on Saturday, August 22, collecting clothing, toys, books, toiletries, school supplies and other essentials to support children, young people and families experiencing hardship across Southern Tasmania.
Kingston couple Zac and Sabrynah, who recently launched The Kindness Cubby, said they were overwhelmed by the response to their first major community event.
“Our very first donation drive brought together our community in the most beautiful way,” they said.
“As we stood in that hall surrounded by donations, generous hearts and people who simply wanted to help, it really hit us just how much The Kindness Cubby is growing.”
The initiative was established with the belief that every child deserves to feel cared for and supported, particularly when families are experiencing difficult circumstances.
The more than 1,600 items collected will now help The Kindness Cubby prepare free care packages for children, young people and families referred through schools, healthcare providers, social workers and other trusted community organisations.
“Every toy, every piece of clothing, every book and every little act of generosity will help us reach a child or family who needs a little extra kindness,” Zac and Sabrynah said.
The couple were joined at the donation drive by committee members Leanne, Peta and Kate, along with volunteer Anne, as the organisation continues to build a team around the initiative.
Behind the scenes, The Kindness Cubby is also working towards becoming an incorporated association, which Zac and Sabrynah said was an important step towards establishing the initiative on a sustainable footing.
“We are taking each step carefully and thoughtfully and having such an incredible group of people around us makes this journey even more special,” they said.
The couple thanked everyone who donated items, volunteered their time, shared information about the drive or stopped by Margate Hall to learn more about the initiative.
“And this is only the beginning,” they said.
“Kindness really does start with one small act, and today, our community showed us just how far that kindness can reach.”
