John Street upgrades complete

The upgrades taking place over the last several months in John Street have been a small part of the ongoing revitalisation of the Kingston CBD, in conjunction with the development of the Kingston Park precinct.

New footpaths on both sides of the street, new kerbs, guttering and drainage systems have all been part of the road works as well as resurfacing the roadway itself.

The project was collaboratively funded by Kingborough Council and the Federal Government.

Mayor of Kingborough, Cr Dean Winter commented that the council was pleased for the assistance under the Roads to Recovery program.

“The Australian government distributes Roads to Recovery funding to every municipality in Australia based on a methodology set by the grants commission,” said Mayor Winter.

“There was a slight overall increase this year meaning we received an additional $150,000.

“Obviously, with a fast-growing population and an infrastructure deficit, we are pleased the Australian Government continues to fund this program.”

Senator Jonno Duniam, Senator Eric Abetz and Senator Clare Chandler gathered with Kingborough councillor Christian Street to review the upgrades on Wednesday, January 29 and to mark the completion of the joint project.

“Our Roads to Recovery investments are delivering safer roads across the country and the completion of these works is good news for local residents,” said Senator Duniam.

“Good, safe roads are vital for local communities and these upgrades will ensure drivers get to their destinations safely, as they should.”

As the Kingston Park project develops further with the addition of more businesses and housing, the new playground and Pardalote Parade, which will connect the John Street/Channel Highway intersection with Goshawk Way, it is expected to drive a change in the use and presentation of the Kingston CBD.

“The finished project at John Street is looking good,” Mayor Winter said.

“We hope it is just the start of the revitalisation of Kingston with the new playground and housing at Kingston Park supported by work to redevelop the Channel Highway at Kingston.”
