Blackmans Bay Primary School held a Uniform Free Day recently, asking students to bring an Easter Egg or gold coin to participate.
Principal Ashley McPherson fully supported the initiative, now in its ninth year.
The goal was to be able to provide at least one Easter Egg (or small gift bag of eggs) for each of the women and children needing crisis accommodation at Jireh House at Easter.
Jireh House provides support for local women and children made homeless due to domestic and family violence and other life crises.
With an outpouring of support from the Blackmans Bay Primary School community, over 200 individuals in need received a special gift at Easter, reaching far beyond the school's original goal.
Enough Easter eggs and Easter themed craft kits were donated to cover the maximum capacity at Jireh House, as well as five other local charities.
These included Kingston Neighbourhood House, Hobart City Mission's 'Mountain View' program, Vinnies' 'Loui's Van' and Bethlehem House.
In addition, 50 gift bags of eggs were donated to the J.W. Whittle Palliative Care Unit in Hobart for patients, their families and staff.
The annual Easter Egg drive has been a simple and very tangible way for students to support their local community that has a huge impact on the recipients.
