A new set of traffic lights will be installed at the intersection of Beach Road and Church Street, Kingston, following a recommendation from the Black Spot Consultative Panel in Tasmania.
The panel is comprised of local stakeholders and ensures projects meet the needs of local drivers.
“I’m pleased to welcome the installation of traffic lights at the intersection of Beach Road and Church Street in Kingston,” Kingborough Mayor Paula Wriedt said.
“This intersection is very busy, with 19 accidents reported over the last five years.
“Along with Council’s $250,000, the Federal Government will invest $500,000 from the Black Spot Program to install the lights.”
The new set of traffic lights will complement the growing usage of this thoroughfare by reducing the risk of collision, especially at peak times.
“Kingston is one of the fastest growing communities in Tasmania, which is why it’s important we ensure our road infrastructure is kept up to date so they’re safe and fit-for-purpose,” Assistant Minister for Infrastructure and Transport and Senator for Tasmania Carol Brown said.
“From all levels of government and across our community, road safety is a shared responsibility, and we all have our part to play to keep each other safe.”
Federal member for Franklin Julie Collins welcomed the road safety upgrades.
“I am proud to be part of a government that is delivering local, high-priority safety improvements and encourage anyone in the Franklin electorate and across Tasmania to nominate sites in future funding rounds,” she said.
Black Spot Program funding will increase from $110 million per year to $150 million as of July 1.
