Dru Point story walk

Previous Next

Families and individuals from Kingborough who have been taking in some fresh air along the nature walk in at Dru Point lately, may have come across a series of new signposts hosting colourful picture plates with a story.

This is the result of an initiative carried out by the Kingston Library, with support from Kingborough Council and funded by the Tasmanian Community Fund.

Called StoryWalk, the panels feature the storyline from a well-known favourite book, written and illustrated by local children’s author, Sonia Strong.

The idea, which originated with Anne Ferguson from Montpelier Vermont, has been adopted by many libraries and community parks throughout the U.S and has now made it to Tassie with the help of Literacy Coordinator Allyson Ekin, from the Kingston Library.

“Along with reading the story, young children are encouraged to move and act out the noises of the animals they read about,” said Ms Ekin.

“It’s a great way for our little ones to get out and exercise their legs, imagination, and reading skills!”
