Bowling excellence celebrated

On Saturday, August 8, the Kingborough Bowls and Community Club held their annual presentation dinner at the Margate club rooms, where trophies and awards were presented to many members of the club for various achievements reached during competition throughout the past season.

The standout of the night was Vicki Bannister, who came away with five trophies.

Vicki won the Women’s Bowl Consistency trophy, the Women’s Skip of the Year, the Women’s Bowler of the Year, the Women’s A Grade Single Competition and was a member of the team who won the Open Womens Fours Club Competition.

The team consisted of Vicki, Glena Thompson, Pauline Connell and Sue Mann.

Other women members to win trophies were: Leonie Price, who won the 100 Up Competition, Ida Jones who, paired Dominic Lacy, won the Mixed Pairs trophy, Ida Jones, Greta Murray and Francis Phillips won the Women’s Open Two Bowl Triples trophy and Greta Murray and Sue Mann won the Women’s Open Pairs trophy.

The winner of the Men’s Two Bowl Handicap Singles trophy was Jason Fowler while Jim Leduke won the Men’s 100 Up trophy.

Fred Sheed, Bob Stanton, Bernie Holland and Gordon Hynes won the B Grade Men’s Fours trophy.

Receiving the trophy for winning the Open Fours Club Competition were Taelyn Male, Jason Long and Graeme Walker.

The winners in the men’s Open Triples Competition were Taelyn Male, Ryan Guy and Jack Butler.

Receiving the trophy in the B Grade Two Bowls Triples were Mike Cawthorn, Jason Williams, and Stuart Traill while the winners of the Men’s Open Pairs Competition were Dominic Lacey and Brett Rollins.

Gavin Fenton received the trophy for winning the B Grade Singles Competition and the Men’s Open Singles Competition winner was Taelyn Male

The Men’s Skip of the Year trophy was awarded to Will Coad, who won 15 of the 16 games he skipped during the Premier Division’s Team Bowls Tasmania South Season. 

Brett Rollins won the Bowler of the Year at the club with 44 points, two points ahead of Jarrod Long.

President of the Club Craig Griggs awarded the Lew Fletcher Cup for Club Person of the Year to Phil Payne for his dedication and workload all year at the club, especially in the Donald Hazell Indoor Centre.

President of Bowls Tasmania South Peter Kirby made a special presentation on the night, giving medals to the Kingborough Premier Division team and the Midweek Division 2 team for winning their respective Pennant competitions, played over the summer in the South of the State.

Mr Kirby also presented Sally Bowes with the trophy for winning the Bowls Tasmania South B Grade Women’s Singles Competition.

Round 6 of the winter Tuesday Fours, held in the Donald Hazell Indoor Centre at the Kingborough Bowls and Community Club, again saw team Parsons be one of the dominating teams on the day, accounting for team Cawthorn by 25 shots.

Other big wins were Harra’s Harem by 20, Cooke also by 20 and Bridge by 21.

However, team of the week must go to team Kosi for a devastating 35 shot win over team Cowen.

Team Kosi consisted of Fred Kosi in the lead position, John ‘Bull’ Oates at number two, Fred Shead in three and skip Pat Lee, who all played consistently well.

The ladder still has Parsons then Harra’s Harem at the top, but below them there has been changes.

Cooke moved to third, Rahmanovic dropped to fourth and both Fenton and Kosi came into the top six, at the expense of Hemmings and Hickey.

Results of competition on the day were :  Kosi defeated Cowen 40-5, Harra’s Harem defeated Hemmings 26-6, Parsons defeated Cawthorn 32-7, Cooke defeated Law 30-10, Newbold defeated Hinkley 21-20, Schooling defeated Rahmanovic 20-9, Fenton defeated Hickey 16-13 and Bridge defeated Mus 30-9.

After the Wednesday Night Fours Competition, the top three teams on the ladder remain the same with The Maughans in first place on 18 points (plus 92 shots), Bananas In Pyjamas in second place on 15 points (plus 56) and team Sass third, also on 15 points (plus 28).

The results of play on the night were: Dodgies downed the Dynamics 18-13, Better Performance defeated the Woodcutters 20-11, the Cherry Pickers defeated the Leftovers 22 -13, Bananas In Pyjamas defeated Scully in a close game 16-13, Sass had a convincing win against The South Africans 22-9 and The Maughans defeated the Oaktree Raiders 21-15.
